Becoming an online community manager can be a bit nerve-racking, especially as your community continues to evolve and grow. The following list provides the key attributes I believe comprise a great community manager!
- Open & Welcoming: It is vital that a community manager is open and welcoming at all times because that sets the tone for the rest of the community. New and current members alike need to feel welcomed into the community and understand it is a safe place to be yourself. Members must feel comfortable turning to the community’s manager when challenges arise!
- Empowering & Inspiring: I believe community managers must go beyond just being there for community members and guiding the group’s engagement. Community managers should empower their members, encouraging them to be the best they can be with confident and rational guidance. Community managers should also inspire their community through their exemplary behavior and attitude. A successful community manager leads by example!
- Selfless & Compassionate: A crucial aspect of being a community manager is being able to put your community and it’s members first, no matter the situation. Community managers must be selfless, caring deeply about the well-being of their group and it’s members. Additionally, community managers must always be compassionate and engage the community with unwavering kindness and empathy.
- Supportive & Understanding: One of the most important key attributes of being a community manager is offering support, whenever needed. Community managers must support their community members at all times. They must also be understanding and considerate, even in difficult situations. Many people join online communities solely for supportive communication. Members count on their community manager to lend a helping hand, offer empathetic and kind guidance, and be unconditionally supportive!
- Strategic & Organized: Another extremely valuable attribute that successful community managers require is being able to keep the community on a strategic and organized track. Community managers position goes far beyond managing the group’s members, they must also be calculated, motivated, and organized to ensure the community is continually meeting their purpose.
- Diplomatic & Confident: Finally, community managers must remain diplomatic throughout all interactions regarding the community. Managing a community can be difficult and tricky at times, but it is vital community managers can confidentially make decisions for the greater good of the group!
